Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches December 3, 2026 with over 500 monsters
Square Enix has officially confirmed that Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will launch worldwide on December 3, 2026. The upcoming monster-collecting RPG is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store.
First revealed during the Dragon Quest 40th anniversary livestream, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is shaping up to be a major new entry in the long-running spin-off series. With hundreds of recruitable creatures, strategic turn-based battles, monster synthesis, online competition, and familiar faces from Dragon Quest V, the game looks set to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers.
The story stars Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. In this new adventure, the two take on the role of monster wranglers, building powerful teams of creatures instead of fighting enemies directly themselves.
Players will be able to form a battle party with up to four active monsters, while another four can be kept in reserve. This gives players a total of eight monsters to manage at any given time, allowing for flexible strategies during combat. Monsters can either be given direct commands or assigned broader battle tactics, depending on how hands-on players want to be.
Bianca and Nera also come with their own special ability known as Wrangler’s Spirit, which can be used once per battle. Bianca’s Wrangler’s Spirit restores HP and increases attack power, making her useful for aggressive strategies and clutch recoveries. Nera’s version restores MP and raises defense, giving players a more defensive option during longer fights.
One of the biggest highlights of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is its massive monster roster. Square Enix has confirmed that the game will include more than 500 monsters across eight different families. The lineup will feature returning fan favorites alongside brand-new creatures created specifically for this entry.
Recruitment plays a central role in the adventure. During battle, players can use a move called Show of Force to scout and recruit monsters. Each creature has its own rank, size, and personality, all of which can influence how it grows and performs in battle. This should give players plenty of room to experiment with team-building and create monster parties that fit their preferred playstyle.
The synthesis system also returns, allowing players to combine two monsters once both have reached level 10. The result is a new child monster that can inherit talents from its parents, opening the door to deeper customization and stronger builds. Repeated synthesis can increase a monster’s Plus Value, which may allow the new creature to reach a higher rank than either of its parents.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will be available in three editions. The Standard Edition is priced at $59.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $94.99. A physical Collector’s Edition will also be available for $219.99 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The Collector’s Edition includes the Digital Deluxe bonuses along with physical extras such as character figurines and a monster-patterned cleaning cloth. For dedicated Dragon Quest fans, it is positioned as the premium version of the game.
Square Enix has also announced four DLC packs available at launch: Mega Mole Hole, Monster Marathons, Metallic Ring, and Scout Run VIP Card. Each pack will be sold separately for $9.99, or players can purchase all four together in a bundle for $34.99.
Online features are also planned, including player-versus-player battles and tournaments between monster wranglers. This should add long-term replay value for players who enjoy competitive team-building and testing their strongest monsters against others.
With its December 2026 release date now set, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is already looking like one of the most anticipated RPG releases for fans of monster collecting, party customization, and classic Dragon Quest charm.
