For gaming enthusiasts eager to modify their Dell Alienware pre-built system with a new motherboard, it might come as a surprise that you’ll need a special conversion kit—and it doesn’t come cheap.
Swapping out the motherboard in Dell’s Alienware Area-51 pre-built system now requires an additional $35 investment for a specific conversion kit. While Dell’s systems are renowned for their powerful performance, they tend to be less accommodating when it comes to aftermarket component upgrades, thanks to a proprietary hardware ecosystem.
The recent Alienware Area-51 system, however, does offer the ability to install a third-party motherboard, albeit with a catch. To make this upgrade, you’ll need the “AlienFX” board cable conversion kit. Priced at $35, this kit might seem overpriced, but it’s key for users aiming to seamlessly integrate external components.
This conversion kit comes equipped with a 14-pin fan power bridge cable assembly, an AlienFX four-pin power switch cable, a top I/O USB dongle, and three micro ATX motherboard screw nuts. With these tools, not only can you enjoy full functionality of the system’s unique features, but you can also take advantage of the customizable Alienware lighting features through the Alienware Command Center.
For those familiar with PC systems, swapping the motherboard isn’t overly complex. The primary concern is ensuring that the new motherboard is compatible with your setup, particularly with an ATX12VO connection from the power supply. For guidance on this process, Dell provides tutorials to aid in the installation of a third-party motherboard.
Despite the $35 price tag for the conversion kit feeling steep, for dedicated Alienware fans eager to enhance their system’s capability with a new motherboard, it could be a worthwhile investment.
