DeepSeek, a leading AI lab from China, is making waves in the digital world with its Android app soaring to the top of the Google Play Store ranks shortly after its chatbot app dominated the Apple App Store.
The app’s popularity is skyrocketing, with app analytics from AppFigures highlighting over 1.2 million downloads on the Play Store and a remarkable 1.9 million downloads on the App Store globally since its mid-January launch. Intriguingly, the label on the Play Store suggests that actual downloads may exceed 5 million.
This meteoric rise has been largely fueled by DeepSeek’s release of a series of open-source AI models. These models have proven to be competitive with the best of the best from major Western AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google. DeepSeek proudly asserts that its AI models were efficiently trained at a fraction of the cost compared to its Western counterparts, utilizing much less advanced AI chips.
The DeepSeek app serves as a compelling alternative to ChatGPT by employing its V3 model. It offers users the ability to analyze files, answer complex questions, and retrieve information from the internet seamlessly. The app’s appeal is further enhanced by being free, allowing file uploads and enabling chat history synchronization across multiple devices.
While DeepSeek currently enjoys top status, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT in long-term dominance will require it to captivate 300 million weekly users. Despite this challenge, DeepSeek and its sophisticated models have been the talk of the industry in recent times. Companies like Perplexity and Gloo, the latter being a new venture from former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, are already exploring ways to integrate DeepSeek into their operations.
DeepSeek’s innovative approach and rapid growth hint at an exciting future in the AI landscape. It remains to be seen how this burgeoning app will shape the trajectory of AI technologies in the competitive global market.
