Tesla’s Cybertruck has demonstrated its prowess in a recent standardized mixed range test, surpassing its official range numbers. In a controlled environment averaging 40 MPH with a mix of 60% city and 40% highway driving, the Cybertruck exceeded Tesla’s stated range. While the Foundation Series Cybertruck with all-terrain tires boasts an official 318 miles range, the test vehicle impressively covered 334 miles, outdoing the expected figures.
However, it’s essential to note that under more extreme conditions, such as towing a large trailer, the Cybertruck’s range can be significantly reduced by as much as 50%. Tesla’s chief of vehicle engineering has acknowledged this, and tests towing heavy loads have confirmed the impact on the vehicle’s range.
Despite potential range reductions under specific conditions, Tesla is focused on enhancing the Cybertruck’s efficiency. The implementation of all-season tires and aero covers, which are associated with a 340-mile range on a charge, is one such measure. Additionally, Tesla plans to introduce a 50 kWh extender battery pack costing roughly $15,000 in late 2024, which could extend the Cybertruck’s range by another 130 miles, aiming for the ambitious 500-mile range target initially promised during the pickup’s reveal.
The Cybertruck’s energy consumption was measured at 45.1 kWh per 100 miles, according to the tests. These results reveal a slightly higher consumption rate compared to the Rivian R1T’s 42.3 kWh and the Ford F-150 Lightning’s 43.7 kWh for the same driving conditions.
As innovation in the electric pickup truck segment continues to evolve, these advancements in range and energy efficiency are significant milestones, aligning with consumer expectations for more sustainable and practical electric vehicles.
