Cotton Reboot! is flying onto new platforms, with Clear River Games confirming that the colorful shoot ’em up is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 on October 22. The updated console release will be available both digitally and as a physical retail edition.
Originally released for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, Cotton Reboot! is a remastered and expanded take on Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams, the beloved arcade classic that helped define the “cute ’em up” style. With its bright visuals, fast-paced horizontal shooting, magical theme, and charming cast, the game remains a standout for fans of retro arcade action and score-chasing gameplay.
Cotton Reboot! brings back the young witch Cotton and her fairy companion Silk as they set out on a whimsical adventure to save Fairyland. The series first appeared in arcades in 1991 before arriving on the Sharp X68000 in Japan, and this modern version keeps the spirit of the original intact while adding updated presentation and new ways to play.
The main attraction is Arrange Mode, which reimagines the classic game with widescreen support, high-definition graphics, and new voice acting. It gives longtime fans a fresh way to experience Cotton’s adventure while also making the game more approachable for newcomers discovering the series for the first time.
Players who want a more authentic retro experience can jump into the original X68000 version, offering a look at how Cotton Reboot! compares to the classic release from decades ago. For those who prefer quick bursts of arcade intensity, Time Attack mode challenges players to rack up the highest score possible within strict two-minute or five-minute limits.
This new edition also adds Nightmare Mode, a tougher challenge designed for experienced players. With increased difficulty and new enemies, it gives returning fans another reason to test their skills and chase higher scores.
Music is another highlight of Cotton Reboot!. The game includes an optional remastered soundtrack created by well-known composers from Japanese game history, including Shinji Hosoe, Hiroyuki Kawada, and Hisayoshi Ogura. Gameplay centers on classic side-scrolling shooting with a few magical twists. Cotton fires at airborne enemies while also using bombs to attack threats on the ground. Defeated enemies drop yellow crystals that can level up her main weapon, but shooting those crystals changes their color and unlocks different elemental spells. One of the game’s key mechanics is Jewel Fever. By defeating enemies, players fill a special gauge that can be activated once full. Jewel Fever boosts firepower and increases the points earned from enemies, making it useful both for escaping dangerous situations and for maximizing high-score runs.
