Cooler Master is getting ready to ship power supplies designed for its GPU Shield safety cable, and pre-orders have already started in China. The goal is simple: reduce the risk of overheating and “burning” issues that have been associated with modern 16-pin RTX GPU power connectors by adding smarter protection between the power supply and the graphics card.
The upcoming Cooler Master MWE Gold V4 series is built specifically to work with the GPU Shield-compatible 16-pin cable. Cooler Master first showed the GPU Shield concept earlier this year, but the key requirement has always been compatibility on the power supply side. With MWE Gold V4 now appearing at major Chinese retailers for pre-order, the launch looks imminent.
Right now, the 850W Cooler Master MWE Gold V4 is listed for around 659 Yuan (about US$97). Cooler Master has previously confirmed the family will include three wattage options: 750W, 850W, and 1000W, giving PC builders multiple choices depending on GPU and system demands. A 1000W version is also said to be in development.
So what makes GPU Shield different from a standard 16-pin power setup? According to Cooler Master, it addresses a key weakness tied to the 12V-2×6 connector design: uneven load distribution across the wires, which can contribute to heat buildup if something isn’t seated correctly or if current flow becomes abnormal. GPU Shield adds real-time electrical monitoring between the PSU and the GPU connector, with status feedback meant to help prevent problems before they become serious.
A video demonstration shared on Bilibili shows how the system communicates its status using an LED located near the 16-pin connector on the power supply. The indicator is designed to be easy to understand at a glance:
– When current stays below 9.3A, the LED shows green, indicating the connector is fully seated and current distribution is normal.
– When current rises above 9.3A, the LED blinks red, signaling an improper connection and uneven current distribution.
– When current exceeds 15A, the LED turns solid red and the GPU’s protection mode triggers, which can result in a screen blackout.
For PC builders and RTX GPU owners who want extra reassurance—especially those using high-power cards—Cooler Master’s MWE Gold V4 lineup and GPU Shield cable approach could become a practical option. With pre-orders already live, broader availability may not be far behind as Cooler Master ramps up shipments.
