Class of ’09 Unveils a Brain-Teasing Puzzle Showdown

Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown brings the late-2000s visual novel series into match-3 multiplayer chaos

Developer SBN3 has officially announced Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown, a new spin on the cult-favorite Class of ’09 series that blends the franchise’s sharp visual novel storytelling with competitive 2D puzzle gameplay.

The Class of ’09 games built a dedicated following with their dark comedy, late-2000s high school setting, and unapologetically chaotic cast of characters. After the original visual novel trilogy wrapped up, fans wondered what would come next for the series. The answer is unexpected but fittingly strange: a story-driven puzzle game packed with campaigns, voice acting, online battles, and the same brand of humor that made the series stand out.

Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown takes the familiar cast and drops them into a match-3 style versus puzzle format. Players swap blocks to create lines of three or more, but the real depth comes from learning how to chain moves together. Mastering chains allows players to overwhelm their opponent before they get buried themselves, turning each match into a fast-paced test of timing, strategy, and pressure.

While the shift from visual novel to puzzle game may surprise longtime fans, the new entry is still leaning heavily into story. Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown includes five unique campaigns, each centered on a different girl from the Class of ’09 cast. Every campaign offers its own perspective, giving players more time with the characters while expanding the world of the series in a new format.

The game will also feature 13 new endings, giving fans plenty of reasons to replay campaigns and explore different outcomes. A side quest focused on Kelly is also included, adding another layer for players who want more character-driven content.

One of the biggest additions is multiplayer. Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown includes both online peer-to-peer multiplayer and local multiplayer, making it possible to take the puzzle battles beyond the story mode. Players can sharpen their skills in the campaigns, then challenge others to see who can dominate the board.

The full voice cast from previous Class of ’09 games is returning, joined by new voices for this entry. The game will also include an original soundtrack with more than a dozen new songs, continuing the series’ strong focus on personality, presentation, and atmosphere.

Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown is shaping up to be a bold evolution for the series. It keeps the biting comedy and character-focused storytelling fans expect, while adding a competitive puzzle system designed for replayability. For players who enjoyed the visual novels, this new entry offers a fresh way to return to the late-2000s world of Class of ’09.

Class of ’09: Puzzle Showdown is scheduled to launch on July 17, 2026.
