Citizen is refreshing its UK Classic collection with a new gold-tone model designed to look sharp, wear easily, and stay hassle-free over the long run. The Citizen AW0089-52E is available now in the UK, priced at £229 (around $307), and it brings together Eco-Drive light-powered tech, a versatile day-date display, and 100 m water resistance in a straightforward everyday package.
At 42 mm, the AW0089-52E sits in that sweet spot for a modern, easy-to-read watch without leaning overly dressy or overly sporty. The stainless steel case and bracelet are finished in a uniform gold tone, with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces that add definition along the case lines. It’s clearly positioned in Citizen’s “Classic” styling lane, but the finishing keeps it from feeling flat or costume-like.
The dial is where this release gets a bit more character. Citizen pairs a black dial with a distinctive textured section through the center, giving the face extra depth when light hits it. Practicality is also front and center: a day-date complication is placed at the 3 o’clock position for quick reference, while a Roman numeral marks 12 o’clock for a traditional touch. The rest of the hour markers are applied gold-tone batons that tie neatly into the case and bracelet.
For the crystal, Citizen uses mineral glass. That’s a common choice at this price point and helps keep the watch accessible, though it won’t offer the same scratch resistance you’d get from sapphire crystal.
One of the biggest selling points here is Citizen Eco-Drive. Instead of relying on regular battery swaps, the watch charges from ambient light and keeps itself running, making it a low-maintenance option for daily wear. The 100-meter (10 bar) water resistance rating also adds confidence for typical exposure like rain, handwashing, and swimming—just not the kind of use you’d associate with more hardcore dive watches.
On the wrist, the bracelet closes with a standard fold-over clasp with a push-button release, keeping things secure and familiar for anyone used to a traditional metal bracelet setup.
The Citizen AW0089-52E is currently listed as a new arrival in Citizen’s official UK store. With its gold-tone look, textured black dial, day-date practicality, and Eco-Drive convenience, it aims at buyers who want the style of more expensive gold-tone mechanical watches but prefer the everyday simplicity—and price—of a light-powered quartz movement.
