China’s Smartphone Industry: Trends and Transformations in Early 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, Chinese smartphone manufacturers shipped over 170 million units, with expectations for a modest increase in the second quarter. The initial three months of the year were challenging for international markets. Despite the National Development and Reform Commission’s efforts to stimulate local demand with a new smartphone subsidy, the boost was temporary, and sales dipped after an early surge in consumer activity.

Globally, shipments from Chinese brands fell by 10.1% compared to the previous quarter but saw a 5.3% increase from the previous year. The first quarter ended with a total of 171.4 million units shipped by Chinese brands. Among these, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo stood out, experiencing a combined growth that outpaced other significant players like Transsion, Honor, Lenovo, and Huawei. Consequently, the top three brands increased their market share to 58.9%, up from 55.7% in the previous quarter.
