Apple Overtakes Samsung in European Smartphone Market for Q4

In a significant turn of events, Apple has finally overtaken Samsung in smartphone sales within Europe, a feat achieved after a two-year race. The shift in market dynamics marks a milestone for the iPhone maker, which has seen its sales flourish even in regions historically dominated by its competitor, Samsung.

Apple Claims Top Spot in European Smartphone Shipments for Q4 2023

Latest data from the market analysis firm Canalys revealed that Apple shipped a total of 12.4 million iPhones across Europe in the fourth quarter of 2023, edging out Samsung’s 10.8 million in smartphone shipments. When compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, Apple’s figures depict a modest 1% increase, while Samsung’s figures show a more considerable decline of 12%. Consequently, Apple captured a 33% share of the European smartphone market, overtaking Samsung which held a 28% market share.

The shift comes amidst a 3% decrease in the overall European smartphone market during the same quarter, with Samsung’s reduction in shipments far surpassing the market’s average drop.

Xiaomi secured the third spot with 6 million shipments, followed by Motorola with two million, and Honor making striking gains with a shipment of 1.1 million smartphones, marking a colossal 116% increase from the fourth quarter of the preceding year. Collectively, other smartphone brands, including ASUS, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, and Vivo, shipped a combined total of 5.5 million units during the final quarter of 2023.

Samsung Maintains Lead in the Annual European Smartphone Market for 2023

Despite the quarterly shakeup, Samsung maintained its lead as the number one smartphone manufacturer in Europe when reviewing the full-year numbers for 2023. The Korean tech giant accomplished a total of 43.7 million smartphone shipments throughout the year, with Apple trailing with 34.6 million iPhone shipments. However, Samsung’s annual shipments dipped by 11%, and Apple saw a reduction of 4% when comparing year-over-year figures. Xiaomi, again, was the third largest with 22.2 million units shipped, signifying a 10% drop from the previous year.

Motorola saw a significant increase in shipments, with a 34% rise translating to 6.4 million phones shipped in 2023. OPPO, however, suffered a significant setback with a decline of 45% in shipments, managing to deliver just 3.7 million units, primarily due to its patent conflicts with Nokia.

This shift in the market underlines growing consumer preferences and the rigorous competition among smartphone brands, with each vying for a larger share of the European market. The figures reveal that while Apple has made impressive inroads, Samsung still holds a robust yearly presence across the continent.
