Apple's foldable iPhone needs to feature thicker glass to eliminate the crease, according to analyst

Chemically Fortified Glass: The Key to Apple’s Foldable iPhone Revolution

The potential for Apple to launch a foldable iPhone is creating quite a buzz, with recent reports suggesting that the tech giant is actively seeking components suppliers to bring this innovative device to life. Speculations indicate that the launch could happen in the latter half of 2026. What’s truly intriguing about Apple’s approach is the aim to produce a foldable phone without the unsightly crease that has been a persistent challenge for its competitors.

Despite years of experience in the foldable smartphone market, other manufacturers have not yet eradicated the crease issue. Apple, however, might be on the verge of a breakthrough. It’s believed that Apple could achieve this by switching from a plastic screen to a more durable thicker glass.

Ross Young, founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, shared insights into Apple’s potential strategy. He suggests that using a thicker front glass, which undergoes a unique chemical treatment, could prevent creases from forming over time. He adds that selectively thinning the seam area may also contribute to a seamless display.

The main hurdle is finding a willing supplier to mass produce this specialized thicker glass. Apple is reportedly partnering with Samsung for the OLED panels, and the new foldable iPhone could adopt a ‘book-style’ form factor similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Samsung’s current Ultra Thin Glass technology allows for continuous folding but does not completely eliminate the crease.

If Apple manages to develop this chemically strengthened glass, it could mark a significant advancement in foldable technology. There are even rumors that Samsung may establish a facility solely dedicated to manufacturing this glass for Apple. This wouldn’t be the first time the Korean company invested heavily in production capabilities for Apple, as seen previously with the M4 iPad Pro series.

Both companies stand to benefit from this collaboration. For Apple, it could mean delivering a premium, crease-free foldable device. For Samsung, it represents a lucrative opportunity, provided Apple places a substantial order. As the two giants potentially join forces, the tech world eagerly awaits what could be a pivotal moment in smartphone innovation.
