The much-anticipated Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, while gearing up to provide fans with enhanced graphics and improved features, has made a notable omission from its gameplay elements. The remaster, touted to be the ultimate edition of the cult classic, will no longer include the “erotica” genre in its photography mini-game—a feature present in the original Dead Rising.
In Dead Rising’s initial release in 2006, players could engage in capturing various types of photographs across five different genres to accrue bonus Prestige Points (PP). These genres included horror, outtakes, drama, brutality, and erotica. Specifically, the erotica category rewarded players for taking suggestive photographs of female characters, both human and zombie.
The recent preview of the remaster, as detailed in various gaming news, highlighted this alteration, which has sparked mixed reactions among the gaming community. Some players looked back at the inclusion of the erotica genre as a quirky, even if controversial, element that contributed to the game’s unique blend of horror and comedy within an open-world mall setting.
Dead Rising stood out by blending the grim setting of a zombie outbreak with an underlying layer of humor, and it offered a broad range of photo opportunities that complemented this tone. The other categories featured horror captures of gruesome scenes, outtakes that allowed for capturing bizarre and funny moments, drama documenting the struggles of survivors, and brutality showcasing the gory end of zombies and, at times, survivors.
The decision to cut one of the original photo categories from Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster aligns with current content standards and sensibilities. Yet, it serves as a reminder of how video game content evolves over time and how developers balance original game features with contemporary expectations.
Scheduled for release on September 19, the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will be available for Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Gamers eagerly awaiting their chance to dive back into the zombie-infested mall will experience this iconic title with all the updates and refinements that are expected to define it as the definitive version of the game. Whether the absence of the erotica genre will impact the overall reception of the remaster remains to be seen as players gear up to revisit the classic zombie narrative with a fresh look.
