Canon Unveils the Game-Changing EOS C80 6K Full-Frame Cinema Camera
Canon U.S.A., Inc., a frontrunner in digital imaging solutions, has just released a groundbreaking cinema camera that’s set to turn heads in the filmmaking community – the EOS C80. This native RF-mount camera packs a powerhouse of features in a compact body, designed specifically for filmmakers who crave both performance and portability.
What makes the EOS C80 a standout is its 6K full-frame, back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor. This advanced sensor includes triple-base ISO settings of 800, 3200, and an impressive 12,800, allowing for stellar imagery across varying lighting conditions. Canon’s latest Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus II further enhances its capability, providing expanded autofocusing areas and fast readout speeds. Think stunning 4K visuals courtesy of 6K oversampling.
But the magic doesn’t stop there. The EOS C80 comes equipped with a 12G-SDI output, ensuring uncompressed video signal transfer via a secure cable connection. Added to this, a variety of interfaces are included such as HDMI, mini-XLR audio inputs, and built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet. These features, combined with Canon’s Remote Camera Control Application and Multi-Camera Control App for iPhone, ensure users have remote accessibility from virtually anywhere.
One of the camera’s highlights is its compact and lightweight design, perfect for aerial shots via drones, mounted on gimbals, or simply on a tripod. Ergonomically designed with a new, lightweight handle assembly, the EOS C80 offers easy control and navigation through an intuitive joystick controller positioned conveniently above the LCD screen.
When it comes to recording, the EOS C80 is unmatchable. It can shoot up to 6K 30P in Cinema RAW Light, along with other recording options such as the XF-AVC codec which records in 10-bit 4:2:2. This ensures rich detail and smooth imagery without cropping the sensor image. Moreover, the camera supports autofocus for slow or fast motion recording up to 4K 120P.
Not stopping there, the EOS C80 also offers two additional recording codecs, XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S. These formats—first seen in the EOS C400—bring ease-of-use with their naming system and folder structure, recording in familiar MP4 formats while preserving metadata.
And the best part? The EOS C80 is set to hit the market in November 2024, with an estimated price of $5,499. It’s ready to revolutionize the filmmaking scene.
For those working with the EOS C400, there’s good news too. A forthcoming firmware update in October 2024 will enable autofocus when recording in slow or fast motion up to 4K 120P.
