BYD Sealion 08 Debuts With Up to 900 km Range and a Price That Undercuts Tesla Model Y L
BYD has introduced the Sealion 08, a new midsize SUV aimed directly at some of the most competitive electric family vehicles in China. With a long driving range, fast-charging battery technology, premium cabin features, and aggressive pricing, the Sealion 08 shows just how intense the EV price and range battle has become.
The new BYD Sealion 08 is available in eight versions, covering both extended-range electric vehicle models and fully electric variants. Prices in China start at around $33,800 and rise to roughly $41,200, putting it well below several rival electric SUVs with comparable size and equipment.
One of the biggest highlights is BYD’s upgraded Blade Battery 2. The battery is used across both the hybrid-style extended-range models and the pure electric lineup, marking a major rollout for the company’s latest LFP battery technology. BYD says the pack can recharge in as little as ten minutes, giving the Sealion 08 a major advantage for drivers who want long-distance usability without lengthy charging stops.
The extended-range versions combine a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with either single-motor or dual-motor electric setups. Depending on the configuration, the electric motors can produce up to 268 hp each. These models use a 55.8 kWh battery pack and can travel up to 400 km on electric power alone. With the gasoline engine acting as a range extender, the total combined driving range can reach up to 1,650 km.
The fully electric BYD Sealion 08 models are even more eye-catching. The top all-wheel-drive version features a powerful rear motor rated at 497 hp and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. It also carries a large 115 kWh battery pack, giving it a claimed maximum range of up to 900 km on the CLTC cycle.
That figure puts the Sealion 08 ahead of several better-known electric SUVs in China, at least on paper. Tesla’s six-seat Model Y L, for example, starts at around $50,440 in the Chinese market and offers a claimed CLTC range of 751 km. By comparison, BYD’s new SUV costs nearly $15,000 less while advertising a longer driving range. While the CLTC testing cycle is typically more generous than EPA ratings used in the United States, the difference still makes the Sealion 08 a serious contender in the electric SUV segment.
The Sealion 08 is not only about range and acceleration. BYD has also loaded the SUV with high-end comfort and technology features designed to appeal to families and premium EV buyers. Available equipment includes a 21.4-inch rear entertainment display, a 25-speaker Devialet audio system with Dolby Atmos, a built-in refrigerator, and DiSus-A air suspension.
The air suspension system also supports a crabwalk-style driving function, helping the vehicle maneuver more easily in tight parking spaces and narrow city streets. Six-seat versions add zero-gravity seats in both the front and second rows, giving the cabin a more luxury-focused feel.
BYD’s ability to offer this combination of battery range, performance, and premium features at such a low price is closely tied to its in-house battery development and strong local supply chain. The company produces many key EV components itself, allowing it to control costs more effectively than many competitors.
The BYD Sealion 08 is another sign that China’s electric vehicle market is pushing automakers to deliver more range, faster charging, better equipment, and lower prices at the same time. For buyers, that competition is good news. For rival brands, it raises the pressure even further.
With up to 900 km of claimed range, ten-minute charging capability, a feature-packed interior, and a price well below the Tesla Model Y L in China, the Sealion 08 could become one of BYD’s most important electric SUVs yet.
