BYD, the prominent Chinese automaker, is racing forward in its global expansion, turning its focus towards Cambodia as a new hub for electric vehicle (EV) production. Following the lead of renowned industry giants like Ford and Toyota, BYD is making strategic moves to establish itself in Southeast Asia, with negotiations in advanced stages to set up a manufacturing plant in Cambodia.
This ambitious development was shared by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet during a graduation ceremony at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Decisions regarding the plant’s construction are expected by 2025. This initiative is part of a broader vision to attract more automotive manufacturers, aiming to boost Cambodia’s vehicle and electronics exports beyond the $2 billion mark and generate over 22,000 new jobs.
The Prime Minister emphasized Cambodia’s readiness, highlighting the nation’s skilled labor force suitable for industries requiring specialized expertise. Natharoun Ngo Son, the Country Director of EnergyLab in Cambodia, supports this vision, recognizing the potential for Cambodia to enhance its workforce skills and create higher-paying jobs through hosting EV production hubs. In alignment with these goals, EnergyLab is preparing an upskilling program set to launch in 2025 to cater to the needs of Cambodia’s growing EV industry.
Recent trends show Ford kicking off production in Cambodia back in 2022, with Toyota joining the bandwagon in May 2024. Meanwhile, BYD has already commenced selling its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Cambodia as of October 2024, marking a significant step in its expanding new energy vehicle (NEV) business. This segment of their business is thriving, with over 500,000 units sold globally by October 2024, recording its fifth consecutive month of growth.
BYD’s ambitions extend far beyond Cambodia; the company is determined to establish manufacturing facilities in other key markets, including Mexico, Brazil, Pakistan, Hungary, and Turkey. While BYD is known for its array of affordable EVs, the automaker is also eyeing a stake in the luxury EV market, showcasing its intent to diversify and upscale its offerings globally. As BYD continues its rapid international growth, its efforts in Cambodia are just the beginning of an exciting era for the company in the Southeast Asian market.
