Apple iPhone Air 2 tipped for three major upgrades, including a second rear camera
Apple’s next ultra-thin iPhone could fix some of the biggest complaints about the first-generation iPhone Air. The second-generation Apple iPhone Air is reportedly already in development, and early details suggest the company is preparing several meaningful upgrades for its slim flagship model.
The original iPhone Air stands out for its thin and lightweight design, while still offering high-end performance with Apple’s A19 Pro chip. However, its slim body comes with compromises. Compared with the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone Air has a smaller battery and only one rear camera, two areas that have drawn criticism from users who want a premium iPhone experience without major trade-offs.
That could change with the iPhone Air 2.
One of the biggest expected improvements is better battery life. It is not yet clear whether Apple plans to use a physically larger battery or improve power efficiency through hardware and software optimization. Either way, longer battery life would make the iPhone Air 2 far more appealing, especially for users who love the thin design but need a phone that can comfortably last through a full day.
The second major upgrade is expected to be the addition of an ultra-wide camera. This would give the iPhone Air 2 two rear cameras instead of one, making it more versatile for photography and video. An ultra-wide lens would be useful for landscape shots, group photos, architecture, travel photography, and close-up creative angles. For many buyers, the lack of a second camera on the first iPhone Air was one of its most noticeable limitations, so this change could make the next model feel much closer to Apple’s higher-end iPhones.
The third major upgrade is expected to come in the form of a new Apple A20 Pro chip variant. This processor is also rumored to power premium models such as the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a possible iPhone Ultra. If accurate, the iPhone Air 2 could deliver flagship-level speed, stronger graphics performance, improved AI features, and better energy efficiency.
Apple is not expected to launch the iPhone Air 2 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in September. Instead, the ultra-thin model is reportedly planned for the first half of 2027, possibly around the same time as the standard iPhone 18. That would place its debut roughly a year and a half after the first iPhone Air arrived.
If these upgrades arrive as expected, the iPhone Air 2 could become a much stronger option for buyers who want a sleek, lightweight iPhone without giving up too much in battery life, camera flexibility, or performance. The combination of a longer-lasting battery, dual rear cameras, and an A20 Pro-class chip could help Apple’s next slim iPhone stand out in the 2027 smartphone market.
