Intel has landed a groundbreaking $7.9 billion grant to boost its semiconductor manufacturing endeavors across the United States, marking a historic moment for both the company and the U.S. federal government. This substantial investment comes under the auspices of the 2022 U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, aimed at fortifying domestic semiconductor production and restoring America’s leadership in this critical industry.
This grant, earmarked for advanced packaging initiatives at Intel’s facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon, stands as the largest direct funding the U.S. government has ever committed to a company. The significant financial backing is expected to spur an economic renaissance in semiconductor manufacturing, creating tens of thousands of jobs and bolstering national security.
Intel’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, has underscored the strategic importance of this funding. He remarked, “With Intel 3 already in high-volume production and Intel 18A set to launch next year, leading-edge semiconductors will once again have a strong foothold on American soil.” Gelsinger emphasized that these developments will not only fuel economic growth but also ensure national security by boosting domestic chip production.
Further sweetening the deal, Intel will capitalize on a generous 25% investment tax credit, part of its broader ambition to invest over $100 billion in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research and development in the coming years. This is in addition to Intel’s ongoing projects, such as the Secure Enclave program, which has secured a separate $3 billion contract aimed at fulfilling the soaring demand for secure semiconductor solutions.
With these moves, Intel is well on its way to reinforcing its dominance in the semiconductor sector while advancing next-generation technologies, including the cutting-edge Intel 3 and Intel 18A process nodes. This initiative not only promises significant economic benefits but also plays a vital role in re-establishing the U.S. as a global leader in semiconductor innovation.
