Beeper, Under Automattic’s Wing, Unveils Revamped Desktop and iOS Applications

In a strategic move to shake up the messaging app industry, Automattic, renowned for its ownership of WordPress.com, acquired Beeper for a grand sum of $125 million last year. This acquisition marked a significant step as Beeper was poised to merge with another app, Texts.com, previously acquired by Automattic in a similar space.

Fast forward to today, and Beeper is introducing an exciting new lineup of redesigned apps for iOS and desktops. This launch comes after the integration of the two platforms and is currently available in beta. The desktop app is built on the foundation of the Texts.com platform, while the iOS app has been completely reimagined from the ground up. The result? A faster and more efficient app that conserves battery life, promising users a seamless experience.

Kishan Bagaria, the founder of Texts.com, communicated via social media that users of the older version of the app can still continue to use it, but there is an upcoming simple transition to the new version. This ensures that users are not rushed into migrating, making it a smooth transition.

The app currently stores messages and credentials on Beeper Cloud, but this is set to change in future updates. All data will be stored directly on devices, ensuring maximum privacy and security with on-device encryption. This means users will benefit from improved data protection while also enjoying the flexibility of supporting multiple accounts from the same messaging service. An exciting future feature is the Mac app’s ability to send and receive iMessages, adding another layer of practicality for Apple users.

Beeper’s inception was spearheaded by Eric Migicovsky, a prominent figure best known for creating the Pebble smartwatch and holding a partnership at Y-Combinator. While he initially led the messaging division post-acquisition, Migicovsky has recently shifted his focus back to reviving the Pebble project. His legacy, however, continues to drive Beeper’s innovation in connecting users seamlessly across multiple messaging platforms.

As these new apps start to reshape the way users manage their messages, it is clear that Automattic’s strategic acquisitions are set to leave a lasting impact on the messaging landscape. With a focus on security, user experience, and seamless integration, Beeper is positioning itself as a distinctive player in this competitive market.
