A major Taiwanese display manufacturer has unveiled a new wave of high-end gaming monitor technology, topped by what it says is a world-first: a 24-inch 1080p monitor capable of hitting an ultra-rare 800 Hz refresh rate.
The announcement came during Touch Taiwan 2026, where AUO shared updates on several next-generation display efforts, including progress toward mass production of its Micro LED technology. But for competitive gamers and esports-focused PC builders, the biggest attention-grabber was the company’s push into extreme refresh rates designed to reduce motion blur and improve responsiveness.
High refresh rate gaming monitors have been escalating quickly over the past year, with multiple brands showing prototypes and future models that go far beyond the 240 Hz and 360 Hz class many players consider “high-end” today. Some manufacturers have already teased 750 Hz panels, while others have talked about 1000 Hz monitors planned for 2026. In that context, AUO’s 800 Hz isn’t positioned as the absolute fastest on paper—but it stands out because AUO is tying that 800 Hz claim to a standard-size 24-inch Full HD (1920×1080) panel, a format that’s long been a competitive gaming favorite.
Alongside the 24-inch 1080p 800 Hz display, AUO also introduced dual-mode monitor concepts aimed at players who want both sharp image quality and high-speed performance without choosing just one. The company described a 32-inch monitor that can switch between 4K at 360 Hz and a separate high-speed mode, as well as a 27-inch 5K display running at 180 Hz. The idea is to give users flexibility: go for maximum clarity and workspace when you want it, then switch into higher-refresh operation when you’re focused on fast-paced gaming where latency and motion handling matter most.
For now, AUO hasn’t shared pricing, release dates, or which consumer monitor brands might ship products using these panels. Since these were early-stage announcements at an industry event, it may take time before they show up in retail gaming monitors that enthusiasts can actually buy. Still, the direction is clear: the race for ultra-high refresh rate monitors is accelerating, and 1080p esports panels remain a prime target for pushing refresh rates into territory that was almost unheard of just a few years ago.
