In a landmark decision that echoes through the annals of gaming history, Atari has taken a significant step by formally acquiring the Intellivision brand, along with a substantial catalogue of over 200 games. This acquisition marks a nostalgic merger of two pioneer gaming companies, once fierce rivals during the dawn of the home video game era in the 1970s and ’80s.
The acquisition sees Intellivision Entertainment LLC relinquishing the rights to the iconic brand and various games but retains its identity as it rebrands and continues to work on the Amico brand game console. The rebrand includes a strategic license agreement with Atari that allows them to keep developing new iterations of Intellivision games for the Amico.
As part of Atari’s vision to enrich their offerings, the company aims to enhance the distribution of Intellivision’s legacy content in both digital and physical formats. Additionally, Atari divulged long-term plans to potentially develop new game titles and explore various brand and licensing opportunities that present lucrative ways to leverage the Intellivision properties.
Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse, an Atari-owned game studio, humorously remarked that this unification puts an end to what could be considered the longest console war in gaming history, stretching over four and a half decades. The original Intellivision console by Mattel Electronics, which sold around 5 million units, fiercely competed with Atari during gaming’s golden years, further dramatized by celebrity endorsements and advertising campaigns.
Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari, sees this merger as an extraordinary chance to bring together communities that have grown around these classic gaming giants. The deal, which includes the Intellivision trademarks and an extensive range of titles, is celebrated by fans of both Atari and Intellivision as a unification of gaming heritage.
Phil Adam, CEO of Intellivision Entertainment, expressed his confidence in Atari’s stewardship of the Intellivision brand. Looking ahead, both companies anticipate an increase in collaborative projects, especially in expanding the Amico platform’s game library with new offerings.
In celebration of this momentous event, Atari has introduced a line of Intellivision-themed merchandise, with t-shirts debuting as part of the collection. Fans can look forward to a range of Intellivision-inspired apparel and collectibles soon to be made available.
This strategic move by Atari not only honors the legacy of both companies but also reinvigorates the classic era of gaming for today’s aficionados, fostering anticipation for what creative and innovative projects might spring forth from this historic gaming alliance.
