The ASUS ROG Strix B860-A Gaming WiFi motherboard is set to introduce the LGA 1851 socket designed for Intel’s Arrow Lake CPUs. Targeted at budget-conscious gamers, this motherboard stands out as a more affordable option compared to Intel’s Z890 series.
Recently featured in an unboxing by a prominent tech YouTuber, this motherboard showcases a sleek, fully white design with its PCB and heatsinks, signaling both style and performance. While official announcements from Intel are still pending, this preview hints at exciting developments in Intel’s 800 series, expanding beyond the Z890 with the B860 chipset.
It’s important to note that while both AMD and Intel are utilizing the B860 naming for their budget motherboard lineups, the specifications and sockets will differ significantly. This particular ASUS model serves as the successor to the ROG Strix B760-A Gaming WiFi, providing a cost-effective alternative to the pricier ROG Strix Z890-A Gaming WiFi.
One key feature of the ASUS ROG Strix B860-A Gaming WiFi is that it cannot overclock the CPU, unlike the Z890 counterpart. Therefore, it is perfect for users running non-overclockable Core Ultra 200S series processors. In the video, the motherboard is shown equipped with substantial heatsinks over the VRM chipset and on both the top and bottom M.2 slots, ensuring effective cooling.
The exact aesthetic features remain ambiguous, such as whether the I/O shroud includes RGB lighting, though the ROG logo is likely to illuminate when powered on. The motherboard offers four DIMM slots for memory, alongside two PCI-E x16 slots, with one enhanced by steel armor for additional durability. Storage is ample with four M.2 slots and four SATA ports. A noticeable change from previous designs is the relocation of the CMOS battery under the primary PCI-E x16 slot, which could complicate removal if a dual-slot GPU is installed.
Additional features include headers for fans and RGB/ARGB lights, and front panel connectivity, but it lacks onboard troubleshooting options beyond DEBUG LEDs. The I/O panel hosts 10 USB ports, including two USB-C 20G ports, and connectivity is strong with Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5G LAN. Conveniently, there are also BIOS Flashback and CMOS Clear buttons.
Currently, pricing and comprehensive specifications remain under wraps. However, anticipation is building for the release of B860 motherboards, expected to roll out in early 2025 alongside the next wave of Arrow Lake CPUs.
