Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Hits Steam Turbulence as Players Blast Microtransactions

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches to huge player numbers, but Steam reviews are divided

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has arrived with a wave of attention, bringing Edward Kenway’s pirate adventure back for modern platforms. The remake has quickly become one of Ubisoft’s biggest PC launches for the franchise, but player reactions are far from universally positive.

While critics have responded strongly to the updated version, with an 84 Metascore, the Steam audience has been more cautious. Early user reviews started off negative before improving to a mixed rating, as players praised the chance to return to the Caribbean but criticized pricing, microtransactions, technical issues, and missing content.

One of the biggest complaints centers on the cost. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is priced at $59.99 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5, which some players feel is steep for a remake of a game originally released in 2013. The $69.99 Deluxe Edition has also drawn criticism, especially from buyers who expected more bonus content to be included.

A major point of frustration is the amount of additional paid content. Reports from players suggest there is around $90 worth of extra DLC available, much of it focused on cosmetic upgrades for characters and ships. Although many of these items do not directly affect core gameplay, some fans are unhappy that a premium edition still leaves so much content locked behind extra purchases.

The map pack has also become a talking point. Unlike purely cosmetic items, this add-on helps players locate treasures, Animus fragments, and other rewards more easily. Because of that, some players believe it should have been included in the Deluxe Edition rather than sold separately.

Performance concerns have also affected the game’s launch-day reception. Several PC players have reported that cutscenes are capped at 30 frames per second, even when the rest of the game runs at higher frame rates. For a modern remake, many expected cinematic sequences to support 60 fps or better. Ubisoft has acknowledged the issue and offered temporary settings adjustments while a proper fix is being prepared.

Beyond technical complaints, some longtime fans are disappointed by changes to the story structure. The modern-day narrative from the original version is reportedly absent, and critics have noted that this could have helped connect Black Flag Resynced more closely with newer Assassin’s Creed entries. For players who value the wider franchise lore, that omission feels like a missed opportunity.

Gameplay changes are also being debated. Combat has been updated, but not every adjustment has been welcomed. One notable difference is that players can no longer steal weapons from enemies during fights, a feature that helped make battles feel more dynamic in the original release. Some Steam reviewers now describe the combat as less flexible and occasionally clunky.

Even with the criticism, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is clearly attracting a massive audience. Following strong pre-orders, the game reached nearly 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. That makes it the highest player-count launch for an Assassin’s Creed title on the platform, surpassing the previous franchise peak set by Assassin’s Creed Shadows at 64,825 concurrent players.

The strong launch shows that Black Flag still holds a special place among fans. Its mix of naval combat, open-world exploration, treasure hunting, and pirate storytelling remains one of the most beloved formulas in the series. However, the mixed Steam reviews also show that nostalgia alone is not enough to satisfy modern players.

For many fans, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced delivers the return of a classic adventure with updated visuals and renewed energy. For others, the high price, expensive extras, frame-rate limitations, and design changes make it harder to recommend at launch.

Ubisoft now has a chance to improve the game’s reputation with patches, performance fixes, and possibly adjustments to content offerings. If those updates arrive quickly, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced could move beyond its rocky reception and become one of the most successful remakes in the franchise’s history.
