Intel has been navigating rough waters recently, but new CEO Lip-Bu Tan is steering efforts to regain momentum. Under his leadership, significant changes have shaped upcoming product releases. Among these is the expected refresh of Intel’s Arrow Lake CPU lineup. However, if recent leaks are accurate, this update might be more modest than anticipated.
Earlier reports hinted at the Arrow Lake Refresh CPUs featuring faster clock speeds and a new Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Originally, Arrow Lake chips, including the Core Ultra 200S desktop CPUs, were set to house NPU 3, a version dating back to 2023’s Meteor Lake chips, with a performance of 11.5 TOPS. The hope was for the Arrow Lake Refresh to incorporate NPU 4, similar to the upcoming Lunar Lake chips, which boast capabilities of 48 TOPS. Unfortunately, it seems Intel will maintain NPU 3 for this refresh.
Renowned leaker Jaykihn has consistently provided insights into the Arrow Lake Refresh. Recently, he asserted that both desktop and high-end laptop CPU models won’t see any NPU upgrades, suggesting the refresh will largely focus on boosting clock speeds, with core counts likely remaining unchanged.
In terms of branding, Intel is likely to retain the Core Ultra 200 series designation for the Arrow Lake Refresh. Adding to the underwhelming news, only the ‘K’ and ‘KF’ models might see enhancements, leaving the rest of the lineup untouched.
The exact clock speed improvements are still under wraps. For context, the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K currently maxes out at 5.5 GHz, which falls short compared to the 14th Gen Core i7 and i9 counterparts. While Intel plans to unveil these refreshed CPUs later this year, a specific launch date remains unspecified.
