As Apple gears up for its Worldwide Developers Conference, the tech giant has unveiled impressive new figures showcasing the U.S. App Store’s financial achievements. According to the company, the App Store ecosystem generated a staggering $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024. This represents a remarkable increase from 2019’s $142 billion.
A standout point in Apple’s announcement is that 90% of these app sales and billings did not incur a commission fee for developers. This highlights the significant share of developers who benefit without the standard commission costs.
The figures come from a study by Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, and economist Dr. Jessica Burley of Analysis Group. These studies have been pivotal for Apple, especially amid ongoing antitrust scrutiny, as they emphasize that only a small fraction of developers pay Apple commissions. In many cases, these developers benefit from reduced rates through programs like the Small Business plan, which lowers commissions to 15% from the usual 30%.
Despite Apple’s efforts to present the App Store as a developer-friendly platform, it has faced legal challenges. Recently, a U.S. court ruled that Apple had violated previous mandates requiring changes to its App Store policies regarding external payment options. Consequently, Apple must now permit developers to include links that allow customers to make payments outside the App Store ecosystem, free from Apple’s commission.
The ongoing debate over App Store commissions has stirred tension within the iOS developer community. Many developers feel their contributions significantly enhance the appeal of Apple devices and deserve more recognition, rather than being seen merely as revenue sources.
Apple maintains that the App Store is instrumental to developers’ success, providing a platform for consumers to discover and purchase new apps easily. The latest report underlines this, showing that earnings for U.S. developers have more than doubled in the last five years. Notably, small business developers have seen their earnings rise by 76% from 2021 to 2024, partly due to the Small Business Program launched in 2020.
Moreover, Apple emphasizes that its App Store opens doors to a global market spanning 175 countries and safeguards against billions in fraudulent transactions. Its investment in 250,000 APIs through frameworks like HealthKit and SwiftUI demonstrates its commitment to innovation.
The report also sheds light on the diverse revenue streams within the App Store that don’t involve commissions. In the previous year alone, the ecosystem facilitated $277 billion from physical goods and services, $75 billion from in-app advertising, and $53 billion from digital goods and services. Since 2019, there’s been a threefold increase in spending on physical goods and services, with significant growth in digital and in-app advertising spending as well.
These figures not only underline the App Store’s immense economic impact but also highlight the evolving landscape of digital commerce and development.
