Apple's Mac shipments have run flat and market share slightly declined ahead of M4 Pro and M4 Max refresh for Mac mini and MacBook

Apple’s Market Share Faces Temporary Dip as Flat Mac Shipments Precede M4 Pro and M4 Max Debut

Apple is gearing up for another major event next month or in November, where they are expected to unveil the latest M4 Pro and M4 Max Macs. As anticipation builds for these new releases, Apple’s recent performance in the market shows a dip in momentum. Last quarter’s Mac shipments have stagnated, with a slight decline in the company’s market share. But the upcoming launch could be the catalyst the company needs to regain its footing.

Recent insights from Canalys reveal that Mac shipments remained largely flat in the last quarter, while Apple’s market share saw a minor year-over-year dip. This hesitancy among consumers is likely because many are waiting for the next major product refresh, which promises significant performance enhancements over existing M3 models.

Contrasting with Apple’s stagnation, the wider PC industry experienced a robust growth of 4 percent, reaching 18.9 million units in the second quarter of this year. Notably, the notebook segment recorded an annual growth of 5 percent, marking a notable success within the category. The enterprise sector, in particular, played a significant role in this growth, with large enterprise PC refreshes driving a 12% increase in shipments.

Greg Davis, a Canalys Analyst, highlighted, “With IT spending ramping up, large enterprise PC refresh is well underway, with shipments to the segment growing 12% in the latest quarter. While growth for consumer and SMBs was not as high, both segments still finished the quarter with healthy increases of 3% and 6% respectively.” This paints a promising picture for the PC market, but Apple’s numbers tell a different story.

In terms of Mac shipments, there was little change from the previous year, with 2.31 million units sold in Q2 2023 compared to 2.322 million units during the same quarter in 2024. This slight drop resulted in a market share decrease from 12.7 percent to 12.3 percent.

Despite these unimpressive figures, Apple’s introduction of the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips is expected to rejuvenate sales and market standing. Historically, Apple experiences a dip in shipments just before a major upgrade as consumers hold off on purchases in anticipation of better, more powerful options. The transition from last year’s M3 chips to the upcoming M4 iterations is particularly anticipated to bring substantial performance gains.

Apple is likely to introduce 14-inch and 16-inch models of the MacBook Pro, alongside a redesigned Mac mini featuring a notably slimmer and more compact design. Such enhancements could potentially recapture the market attention and boost the company’s shipment figures, especially for the Mac mini with its M4 chips.

Ultimately, the success of these new releases and their impact on Apple’s market performance will depend on how well they are received by consumers. While there’s optimism surrounding the upcoming event, only time will tell if these innovations can restore Apple’s momentum in the competitive tech landscape.
