Apple Unveils Mac Studio With M5 Ultra, Delivering a Major Performance Leap for Creative Pros
Apple has introduced its refreshed Mac Studio, and the headline upgrade is the arrival of the M5 Ultra, the company’s most powerful chip yet for a compact desktop workstation. Instead of waiting for a later launch window, Apple has revealed both the new silicon and the upgraded Mac Studio together, giving professionals a major boost in CPU, GPU, memory, AI, and media performance.
The M5 Ultra continues Apple’s UltraFusion approach, combining two M5 Max chips into one high-performance system-on-chip. This design allows the two chips to communicate through an extremely fast, low-latency interconnect, helping the system behave like a single powerful processor rather than two separate chips working side by side.
At the center of the M5 Ultra is a 36-core CPU, featuring 12 high-performance cores and 24 efficiency-focused cores. Apple says this new chip delivers up to 25 percent faster single-threaded performance and up to 30 percent faster multi-threaded performance compared with the M3 Ultra. That means faster app launches, smoother multitasking, quicker code compilation, improved 3D workflows, and stronger performance in demanding professional software.
Graphics performance also receives a major upgrade. The M5 Ultra includes an 80-core GPU, and each GPU core comes with a Neural Accelerator. Apple has also added second-generation Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and third-generation ray tracing cores. Together, these improvements allow the M5 Ultra to deliver up to 40 percent faster graphics performance than the M3 Ultra.
For professionals working in 3D rendering, visual effects, animation, game development, simulation, and high-resolution video production, this GPU jump could make a noticeable difference. The upgraded ray tracing hardware should also help with more realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows in supported creative and design applications.
Apple is also pushing the Mac Studio further into AI and machine learning workflows. The M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB of unified memory, with memory bandwidth reaching 1.2TB/s. That is 50 percent more bandwidth than the M3 Ultra, giving the system the ability to handle extremely large datasets and demanding AI models.
With this level of memory capacity and bandwidth, Apple says the new Mac Studio can run multi-billion-parameter large language models locally. This makes the machine more appealing to AI developers, researchers, and businesses that want high-performance machine learning capabilities without relying entirely on cloud-based computing.
The 32-core Neural Engine further improves AI-related performance, helping accelerate tasks such as image processing, video analysis, speech recognition, machine learning inference, and other intelligent workflows built into modern professional apps.
While the external design of the new Mac Studio remains familiar, the internal upgrades are substantial. Apple has kept the compact desktop form factor, but the performance gains make this refresh a significant step forward for users who need workstation-class power without moving to a full tower system.
The media engine has also been improved. According to Apple, the M5 Ultra can simultaneously play up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 frames per second. This is a major advantage for editors working with multi-camera projects, high-resolution footage, color grading, and professional post-production pipelines.
Storage performance is another area where the new Mac Studio moves forward. Apple has upgraded the system to PCIe NVMe Gen 6 storage, bringing much faster read and write speeds along with a major increase in random IOPS. This should help with large file transfers, high-resolution video editing, software development, and workloads that constantly move data between storage and memory.
Connectivity has also been modernized. The new Mac Studio includes Thunderbolt 5 ports, offering faster external storage support, expanded display options, and improved bandwidth for professional accessories. Wireless connectivity is powered by Apple’s in-house N1 chip, bringing support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
