Apple’s smartwatch lineup has often relied on design refinements, health features, and software improvements to convince users to upgrade. For several generations, the System in Package powering the Apple Watch delivered only modest year-over-year gains. That pattern appears to be changing with the new S11 chip inside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

This year’s S11 brings a much more meaningful hardware upgrade, with its design reportedly derived from the A20 Pro chip used in Apple’s latest iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. That connection matters because the S11 is built with a stronger focus on artificial intelligence, faster memory performance, and improved on-device processing.

The biggest change is the architecture. The S11 features two efficiency cores, a single-core GPU, and a dedicated 4-core Neural Engine. This setup is designed to handle everyday smartwatch tasks more efficiently while also giving Apple more room to introduce advanced AI-powered features directly on the device.

On-device AI is becoming increasingly important for wearables. Features involving health tracking, fitness insights, voice processing, smart replies, and contextual suggestions all benefit from faster local processing. Another notable detail is the amount of memory inside the S11. The new Apple Watch chip now reportedly includes memory comparable to what Apple offered in the iPhone 13 back in 2021. That is a significant milestone for a wearable device and shows how far Apple’s smartwatch hardware has progressed in only a few years.

This upgrade also highlights how overdue a major Apple Watch chip improvement had become. Previous generations, including the S10, were seen as more iterative, with limited architectural changes. The S11 finally gives the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 a stronger foundation for future software features.

Long-term support could be one of the biggest advantages of this new chip. For buyers deciding whether to upgrade, the S11 could be the most compelling reason in years. The Ultra model remains the premium option for users who want a larger display, tougher build, and advanced outdoor-focused features, while the Series 12 offers the more mainstream Apple Watch experience.
