Apple Watch Series 13 Could Bring the Biggest Design Shake-Up in Years
Apple’s smartwatch lineup may be heading for a major refresh, but fans might have to wait a little longer to see it. According to recent rumors, the Apple Watch Series 13, expected in 2027, could be the model that finally delivers a more dramatic redesign after years of relatively small visual changes.
The Apple Watch has evolved much more slowly than the iPhone in recent generations. While Apple regularly updates its phones with new chips, camera systems, and design tweaks, the Apple Watch has often received more modest annual improvements. The Series 11, for example, is said to rely on processor technology that is not significantly different from what Apple used in recent previous models, and it reportedly does not bring a major design overhaul.
This slow pace is not entirely new. Apple previously used very similar chip technology across the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, and Series 8. A similar pattern appears to have continued with the Series 9, Series 10, and Series 11, which are believed to share closely related processor hardware. If Apple follows its usual cycle, the Apple Watch Series 12 could be the model that introduces a more powerful new chip before the larger design changes arrive later.
For 2026, Apple is expected to focus more attention on the Apple Watch Ultra 4. That model is rumored to launch in September with a more substantial redesign and upgraded sensors. The Ultra line has become Apple’s more rugged, premium smartwatch option, aimed at outdoor users, athletes, and buyers who want longer battery life and a tougher build. A redesigned Apple Watch Ultra 4 could help Apple refresh interest in its high-end wearable lineup before the standard Apple Watch gets its bigger makeover.
The most interesting rumor, however, points to the Apple Watch Series 13 in 2027. A leaker claims this model will arrive with major changes, potentially tying into earlier reports about a so-called “Apple Watch X” concept. Those earlier rumors suggested Apple had been exploring a complete rethink of the watch’s design, including a magnetic quick-release band system.
If Apple adopts a new magnetic strap mechanism, it could make changing bands faster and more seamless. However, it may also mean that older Apple Watch bands would no longer be compatible. That would be a major shift, especially for longtime Apple Watch users who have collected several straps over the years. Apple has kept band compatibility surprisingly consistent since the first Apple Watch, so any change to that system would be one of the most noticeable updates in the product’s history.
At the moment, there are no confirmed details about what the Apple Watch Series 13 redesign will look like. Apple last refreshed the watch’s appearance with the Series 10 in 2024, making the case slightly thinner and reducing the screen bezels for a more modern display. Even then, the overall shape remained familiar. The Apple Watch has kept its rounded-square design since the original model, and Apple has generally avoided dramatic changes to its core wearable design language.
A bigger redesign in 2027 could give Apple a chance to address one of the Apple Watch’s longest-running complaints: battery life. Most standard Apple Watch models still require daily charging, which remains a weakness compared with some competing smartwatches and fitness trackers. While Apple has improved efficiency over time, many users continue to hope for a standard Apple Watch that can last multiple days on a single charge.
For now, the Apple Watch Series 13 remains a rumor, and Apple’s plans could change before 2027. Still, the possibility of a redesigned body, a new band system, and improved internal hardware makes it one of the most anticipated future Apple Watch models. If the reports are accurate, Apple may finally be preparing to give its mainstream smartwatch the bold update many users have been waiting for.
