In response to these concerns, reports have emerged that Apple is considering the acquisition of a specialized AI startup to bolster privacy measures in its products.
Apple’s Interest in Brighter AI for Enhancing Privacy Features
According to reports from 9to5Mac, Apple is currently in discussions with Brighter AI, a German AI startup, about a potential acquisition. This move is aimed at enhancing the privacy features of the Apple Vision Pro headset.
Based out of Berlin, Brighter AI specializes in an advanced anonymity technology known as Deep Natural Anonymization 2.0, which is designed to obscure faces and license plates in images without resorting to traditional blurring techniques. Instead, their technology maintains the integrity of the image while effectively protecting individual identities, aligning with regulations like the GDPR, CCPA, APPI, and PIPL.
Apple and Google, both recognized for their efforts to blur faces and license plates in map imagery for privacy purposes, have made strides to improve these technologies in the US and Europe since 2015. However, the more traditional methods of blurring seem dated when compared to the innovative solutions offered by Brighter AI.
The acquisition of Brighter AI would present Apple with the opportunity to replace outdated blurring techniques with more sophisticated AI-driven solutions.
