Apple Strikes $1.5 Billion Agreement with Globalstar to Broaden Satellite Messaging Capabilities

Apple is making significant waves in the world of satellite communications with a $1.5 billion investment in Globalstar, extending its reach beyond just emergency services. This strategic move grants Apple a substantial 20 percent stake in Globalstar, along with substantial funds to enhance the satellite infrastructure needed for broader applications.

The infusion of $1.1 billion is earmarked for developing an extensive satellite infrastructure, while an additional $400 million secures Apple’s ownership stake in the company. This collaboration initially took flight in 2022, enabling iPhone 14 users to access emergency satellite messaging. However, with the upcoming iOS 18, Apple is poised to elevate this service, allowing users to send encrypted texts, emojis, and tapbacks via satellite across both SMS and iMessage.

Globalstar plans to bolster its capabilities by launching up to 26 new satellites, adding to their current fleet of 31 low Earth orbit satellites. Part of the investment, exceeding $200 million, will be allocated to alleviating Globalstar’s existing debt, reinforcing their financial position.

Apple’s ownership of 85 percent of Globalstar’s network capacity provides ample room for expanding satellite services. The arena is becoming increasingly competitive, as evidenced by Google’s recent partnership with Skylo to introduce emergency SOS messaging on the Pixel 9 series.

Expected to wrap up by early November 2024, this deal represents a significant leap in satellite messaging technology. Currently, Apple offers these enhanced satellite communication services for free to iPhone users. However, the inclusion of non-emergency features suggests that Apple might eventually introduce charges for the feature, presenting a potential new revenue stream.

As technological advancements unfold, Apple’s push into satellite messaging is a clear indicator of its ambition to revolutionize mobile communications, making global connectivity more seamless and secure than ever.
