Apple Pulls the Plug on iPhone Air Production Lines

iPhone Air 2 reportedly delayed past 2026 iPhone 18 launch window as suppliers scale back production

Apple’s ultra-slim iPhone Air is facing a major shake-up. A new report citing three internal sources claims Apple does not plan to release an iPhone Air 2 alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in fall 2026—and it’s unclear whether a successor will arrive at all. The update adds weight to recent rumblings that the ultra-thin model’s future is uncertain.

According to the report, suppliers tied to the iPhone Air have dramatically reduced output. Industry analyst chatter previously indicated capacity cuts of more than 80% for most iPhone Air suppliers, and now assembly partners appear to be winding down even further. Foxconn has shut down nearly all iPhone Air lines, keeping just one full line and half a line running for now, with plans to halt the rest by month’s end. The other main assembler, Luxshare, stopped its iPhone Air production back in October.

Apple had already planned for a cautious rollout, allocating roughly 10% of production to the ultra-slim model. Even with that conservative approach, demand reportedly fell short of expectations, prompting the current pullback and raising questions about when—or if—the iPhone Air 2 will make it to market.

Sales data points to a slow start. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners estimates the iPhone Air accounted for about 3% of total iPhone sales in September. By comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro captured around 9%, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max reached roughly 12% over the same period. That mix suggests buyers gravitated toward the flagship Pro models over the new ultra-thin design.

Despite the uncertainty, the project hasn’t been abandoned. Internally known as V62, the next-generation iPhone Air is still in development, and Apple could revisit the concept after significant design changes. On a recent earnings call, Apple’s CEO avoided commenting specifically on iPhone Air performance, saying only that the company has seen a tremendous response to the iPhone 17 lineup overall.

Key points:
– iPhone Air 2 is not expected to launch with the iPhone 18 lineup in fall 2026
– Supplier capacity for the ultra-slim model has reportedly been slashed by more than 80%
– Foxconn is pausing all remaining iPhone Air production lines by the end of the month; Luxshare already halted production
– Apple initially devoted around 10% of production to the iPhone Air, but demand appears to have lagged
– CIRP estimates the iPhone Air at 3% of September sales, versus 9% for iPhone 17 Pro and 12% for iPhone 17 Pro Max
– The successor, codename V62, is still in development and could re-emerge after design revisions

What this means for shoppers and Apple watchers: the ultra-slim iPhone concept isn’t dead, but it may be headed back to the drawing board. If Apple does reintroduce the iPhone Air after a redesign, expect a refreshed strategy, a new feature pitch, and a different timeline than initially expected.
