Apple Reportedly Pushes Samsung and LG for Cheaper iPhone 18 Pro Max OLED Displays
Apple is reportedly trying to lower the cost of OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with Samsung and LG said to be under pressure to reduce display pricing by around 20 percent for the larger flagship model.
The move appears to be part of Apple’s broader effort to protect profit margins as several key iPhone components become more expensive. Rising wafer costs, higher memory prices, and the expected cost of Apple’s next-generation chip are all putting pressure on the bill of materials for future Pro iPhones.
According to the report, Apple is targeting a price of about $70 for the OLED display used in the iPhone 18 Pro Max. However, Samsung and LG may be able to bring the average cost down even further, potentially to around $66.50 per panel. If accurate, that would mark a notable reduction compared with previous Pro Max display costs.
For comparison, the OLED panel used in the iPhone 17 Pro Max reportedly averaged around $80, while iPhone 16 Pro Max display costs were often said to be above $100. A drop to the mid-$60 range would give Apple meaningful savings, especially when multiplied across millions of units.
What makes the potential discount more interesting is that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to use a newer M16 OLED panel. This display technology is said to offer improved luminous efficiency, longer lifespan, better image characteristics, and richer color reproduction. In simple terms, Apple could receive a more advanced screen while paying less than it did for earlier Pro Max OLED panels.
Samsung and LG may be willing to accept lower pricing because Apple’s flagship iPhones ship in massive volumes. Even with reduced per-unit margins, large-scale orders for the iPhone 18 Pro Max could still generate substantial profit for both display suppliers. Few smartphone brands can offer the same guaranteed volume for a single premium model, which gives Apple unusual leverage during supplier negotiations.
The reported display cost reduction also comes at a critical time. OLED panels have historically been one of the most expensive parts of an iPhone’s bill of materials. But the cost pressure is now expanding beyond displays. Apple is expected to use the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro series, and this processor is rumored to be the company’s first 2nm system-on-chip. That technological leap could come with a steep price, with estimates suggesting a cost of around $280 per unit.
Memory pricing is another major concern. DRAM and NAND flash prices have been rising across the electronics industry, affecting smartphones, PCs, servers, and other consumer devices. If those increases continue, the total bill of materials for the iPhone 18 Pro Max could rise sharply, with some estimates suggesting it may be up to $300 higher than before.
That puts Apple in a difficult position. The company can either absorb some of the additional cost, raise iPhone prices, or negotiate aggressively with suppliers to reduce expenses wherever possible. Pushing Samsung and LG for lower OLED prices appears to be one of the clearest ways Apple can offset the growing cost of chips and memory.
For consumers, the big question is whether these supplier negotiations will help keep iPhone 18 Pro Max pricing stable. Apple has typically tried to balance premium hardware upgrades with careful pricing strategies, but the rising cost of advanced chips, memory, and display technology could make that harder with the next generation.
If the reported OLED price cut goes through, Apple may be able to maintain stronger margins without passing the full cost increase on to buyers. At the same time, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could still deliver a better display, improved efficiency, and enhanced image quality thanks to the newer M16 OLED panel.
For now, the information should be treated as an early supply chain report rather than a confirmed detail. Still, it highlights how important component pricing has become for Apple’s future iPhone strategy. As the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max move closer to production, display costs, memory prices, and the 2nm A20 Pro chip will likely remain key factors shaping Apple’s next premium smartphones.
