Apple pulls HomePod 18.1 beta 2 after bricking reports

Apple Halts HomePod 18.1 Beta 2 Due to Widespread Bricking Issues

Apple recently had to retract its HomePod software version 18.1 beta 2 due to reports of bricking issues from users. This marks the second instance in quick succession where Apple had to pull back an update because of similar problems—first with the M4 iPad Pro models during the public release of iPadOS 18.

Reports first surfaced on MacRumors, where forum members highlighted the issue. One user, ‘Jeromec,’ recounted that his two HomePod mini units became unresponsive post-installation of the HomePod software 18.1 beta 5. In his detailed account, he explained that resetting the smart speakers only resulted in the top light transitioning from white to red before disappearing completely, rendering both devices non-functional. Even attempts to restore the units using a MacBook Pro M1 with Sequoia 15.0 failed, as the HomePod mini didn’t show up in the USB device list.

Jeromec wasn’t alone. Another forum member, ‘KoToNaS,’ mentioned that three out of his four HomePod models ceased functioning after the same software update. Restarting them proved futile, with the only feasible solution being a complete restore via Apple Configurator.

Apple has yet to issue an official statement explaining the cause of these issues. For a company of Apple’s standing, these back-to-back bricking incidents cast a shadow on its software update reliability. Users are now eagerly awaiting a swift resolution to these problems to restore confidence in Apple’s software ecosystem.
