Apple is making significant strides in enhancing its operating system by continually upgrading its artificial intelligence features. Yet, despite global advancements, China has yet to receive these sought-after AI features on iPhones, posing potential challenges for Apple’s future sales in the region. The hold-up stems from China’s requirement for government approval of any generative AI services. In a strategic move to overcome this hurdle, Apple has teamed up with Alibaba to bring its AI capabilities to Chinese consumers.
Rumors had swirled about a possible partnership between Apple and DeepSeek, especially after DeepSeek’s R1 model made waves by challenging prominent AI platforms like ChatGPT. However, Apple opted to collaborate with Alibaba, a company that has recently introduced its own Qwen AI model. Alibaba claims that Qwen not only competes with but surpasses its rivals, including the much-talked-about DeepSeek and ChatGPT.
The choice to partner with Alibaba, rather than deploying Apple’s own AI, stems from China’s preference for collaborations with local companies. This has delayed the introduction of Apple Intelligence to Apple’s devices in China. Reports suggest that Apple and Alibaba have already submitted their first joint AI project to China’s cyberspace regulator and are awaiting the green light. Given the rapid development pace in AI, it’s likely that Apple will expedite this process to alleviate the absence of AI features on its iPhones, iPads, and Macs in China.
Last year, Apple had been rumored to be in discussions with Tencent and ByteDance regarding AI partnerships and even considered Baidu’s AI services for integration with the iPhone. The latest developments seem to indicate that Apple has finally secured an AI partner, a vital step to address stagnating iPhone sales in China, which could be partly attributed to the lack of AI features.
However, the dip in sales might not solely be blamed on the absence of AI. Competitors have been advancing rapidly, offering innovative designs and features that are possibly drawing users away from Apple. This landscape suggests Apple’s need to not only catch up in AI offering but also deliver groundbreaking innovations to regain consumer loyalty.
