Alibaba chairman announces partnership to bring Apple Intelligence to iPhones in China

Alibaba Partners with Apple to Introduce AI Innovation to iPhones in China, Launch Date for Generative Features Uncertain

Apple’s journey to establish a robust presence for its intelligence features in China has been fraught with challenges. Reports have highlighted the necessity of partnering with prominent local tech giants like Tencent or ByteDance to integrate advanced AI functionalities into iPhones within the region. Initially, Apple considered DeepSeek as a partner, but it switched gears, opting for a collaboration with Alibaba instead. This decision has now been officially confirmed as Alibaba’s chairman announced the partnership’s initiation at the World Governments Summit in Dubai.

Alibaba is known for its impressive repertoire of open-source AI models, which can be freely used and adapted according to varied needs. On top of that, the company also develops sophisticated, closed-source AI models. Recently, with its Qwen2.5 series launched in September, Alibaba unveiled a diverse range of over 100 open-source models, with capabilities scaling from 500 million to an impressive 72 billion parameters. This wealth of AI expertise likely played a significant role in Apple’s choice to form an alliance with the tech conglomerate.

Joe Tsai, the chairman of Alibaba Group, officially revealed the collaboration with Apple at the summit, which consequently saw a surge in Alibaba’s stock prices, reaching a three-year peak. This collaboration is set to be highly advantageous for Apple, as the company’s CEO, Tim Cook, has noted. In countries where Apple’s generative AI features are supported, there’s been an observable increase in iPhone 16 sales. This demand likely influenced Apple’s strategic move, especially considering the recent dip in revenue from China noted in their Q1 2025 financial report.

While there isn’t an exact timeline for when Apple Intelligence will debut in China, the partnership should expedite the process. China’s stringent regulations necessitating local partnerships have posed significant hurdles, explaining why international AI entities like ChatGPT haven’t made inroads via Apple in the local market. With this new advancement, Apple is poised to overcome these obstacles and could potentially capture a substantial share in the world’s most prolific smartphone market by volume.
