Apple may be preparing a simple but powerful upgrade to its iPhone lineup strategy: using color as a sales lever, especially in high-stakes markets like China. According to noted Apple watcher Mark Gurman, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are being considered for a new “deep red” finish—an option that could be far more than just another stylish coat of paint.
The idea isn’t coming out of nowhere. Apple has already seen how a standout color can influence buying behavior in China. The iPhone 17 Pro Max reportedly gained major momentum there thanks in large part to its “Cosmic Orange” variant, a shade associated with luxury branding and premium fashion appeal. That color connection helped push the iPhone’s status beyond a typical smartphone purchase and into the “luxury product” category for many shoppers—an angle that appears to have translated directly into results.
Recent performance figures underscore why Apple would want to repeat that playbook. Apple’s China sales were said to have climbed sharply in the December-ending quarter, with company leadership also pointing to strong growth in retail store traffic in the region. Separate market tracking for January 2026 also suggests Apple managed to post year-over-year growth in China, at a time when other major smartphone brands in the country were experiencing steep declines. Whether driven by product mix, branding, or timing, it’s clear Apple has reasons to keep leaning into what’s working.
That brings the focus back to “deep red.” In China, red is widely seen as a lucky, celebratory color tied to prosperity, joy, and good fortune. In India, it carries similarly positive cultural weight, often connected to happiness, marriage, and tradition. If Apple introduces a richer red tone on the iPhone 18 Pro models, it could resonate emotionally and culturally in a way that typical neutral colors don’t—potentially giving the lineup a meaningful boost in markets where symbolism can influence purchase decisions.
Earlier chatter had suggested Apple might explore purple and brown finishes for the iPhone 18 Pro range. However, Gurman now believes those earlier rumors may have reflected variations on the same broader “red” concept, noting that the tones were close enough to be interpreted as related experiments rather than truly separate ideas.
Interestingly, Apple may be taking the opposite approach for its rumored foldable iPhone. Instead of bold, attention-grabbing colors, the foldable model is said to be headed toward more practical, understated finishes—think dark gray, black, and lighter tones like white or silver. If that holds true, it suggests Apple could be positioning the foldable as a more utilitarian, design-forward device, while letting the iPhone Pro series carry the more expressive, culturally targeted color strategy.
If Apple does move forward with a deep red iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, it won’t just be another aesthetic refresh. It could be a deliberate move to strengthen demand, reinforce premium perception, and better match consumer preferences in regions that matter most for growth.
