Apple Challenges Ruling on Allowing External Payment Links in Apps

Apple has officially appealed the recent court ruling mandating that it allow external payment methods in its App Store. The decision, driven by a legal clash with Fortnite creator Epic Games, challenges Apple’s restrictive payment policies in the U.S. App Store.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers criticized Apple for attempting to circumvent the ruling by strictly controlling entitlements, which are exceptions to its rules, and imposing a 27% commission on external purchases. Additionally, Apple required developers to use alarming pop-ups to discourage users from buying directly from their websites.

In her decision, Judge Rogers emphasized that the court’s injunction was definitive, not a matter for negotiation. She also accused Apple’s VP of Finance, Alex Roman, of perjury, suggesting further investigation might be needed for possible criminal contempt.

Despite expressing strong disagreement, Apple has complied by updating its App Store policies, allowing developers like Spotify to present alternative payment options. Yet, Apple remains determined to contest the ruling, having filed an appeal on Monday, which is now moving forward in the legal system.

In anticipation of potential changes, Apple might consider introducing incentives to keep developers using its payment system. This could manifest as a reduced commission rate announced at the upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference, possibly extending beyond its Small Business Program. As the legal battle unfolds, Apple continues to adapt to the court’s demands while preparing for future strategies.
