Apple has revealed an upcoming feature at the annual WWDC event which will offer developers an additional avenue to have their applications highlighted on the App Store. Set for release in September with the new iOS 18, this feature introduces “Featuring Nominations,” a formalized way for developers to grab the attention of Apple’s Editorial team for potential App Store features.
The App Store’s Editorial team curates compelling stories and collections that showcase apps to users across many sections of the store. Historically, developers lacked an official mechanism to flag significant updates or launches to this team for editorial consideration. The forthcoming system aims to bridge this gap, providing a structured process for developers to showcase their newsworthy app updates.
Through the App Store Connect interface, which developers use to manage their apps, a new Nominations dashboard will be available. Here, developers can submit nominations individually or in bulk via a spreadsheet. Key to a successful submission is assigning a memorable name that encapsulates the essence of the app’s update, effectively communicating its significance to the editors.
Developers can nominate their apps for consideration under three categories: new content, enhanced features, or entirely new app launches. Submissions should include a detailed description, the anticipated release date of the update, and any additional insights that may bolster the app’s editorial eligibility — such as the developer’s personal story, innovative creation methods, accessibility efforts, or inclusivity strides.
In tandem with these submissions, developers will receive immediate notifications via App Store Connect if their application is chosen for a feature, complete with marketing assets tailored to promote this achievement on social media and other platforms. Additionally, Apple promises marketing materials to support other major milestones in an app’s lifetime, like launches and significant updates.
Moreover, updates to Apple’s TestFlight platform were discussed at the event. A notable enhancement will permit developers to specify tester criteria for pre-launch app testing, ensuring that only the most relevant users — by device, software version, or other factors — are able to access and test beta builds.
Furthermore, developers will be able to create and use deep links to specialized product pages that highlight unique app features or promotions. These links can be effectively utilized in Apple Search Ads campaigns and on various social media platforms to drive targeted engagement.
The anticipation for iOS 18 grows as it prepares for public release this upcoming fall, bringing with it these advanced features and opportunities for app developers to showcase their work and connect more deeply with their audience through the App Store.
