Apple had ambitious plans to introduce an Apple Watch with a built-in camera in its 2027 models, but recent updates indicate that these plans have been shelved. The innovative concept was to integrate a camera into both the standard and Ultra models of the Apple Watch, offering users the ability to view their surroundings with the help of AI-driven features. However, reports now confirm that this project has been discontinued, leaving no indication of revival in the near future.
The envisaged camera wouldn’t have functioned like the iPhone’s camera and wasn’t intended for FaceTime or photography. Instead, it aimed to provide users with detailed information about their environment, akin to the iPhone’s Visual Intelligence. This feature would have greatly enhanced the watch’s utility, particularly for travelers needing translation services or for accessibility assistance, like identifying objects or displaying business hours when pointed at a restaurant or store.
The distinctive blend of the Apple Watch’s portability and this potential feature made it an appealing concept. Nevertheless, the compact nature of the Apple Watch likely posed significant challenges, with limited internal space compared to the iPhone potentially being a roadblock.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Apple will revisit this technology. While the camera-enabled Apple Watch is off the table, the company’s exploration into camera-equipped AirPods is still on track. These devices will reportedly use infrared sensors to facilitate features like enhanced spatial audio, AI-driven controls, and intuitive in-air gestures.
