Apple A18 in iPhone 16 Disappoints with Underperforming Geekbench Multi-Core Test

The first Geekbench run of the rumored Apple A18 chip has surfaced, and early results are stirring up some mixed feelings. Apple recently unveiled the iPhone 16 lineup, boasting several enhancements, including two new System on Chips (SoCs). Among them is the Apple A18, designated for the non-Pro models of the iPhone 16. However, its preliminary multi-core performance on Geekbench has left some tech enthusiasts scratching their heads.

This fresh SoC from Apple is not just a revamped A17 Pro, as the company has indicated in recent announcements. Apple opted to compare the A18 with the A16, perhaps to highlight its advancements. Just as the iPhone 16 was making headlines, a Geekbench entry allegedly featuring the Apple A18 appeared, showcasing a single-core score of 3,114 and a multi-core score of 6,666.

For comparison, the A17 Pro previously scored a maximum of 2,930 in single-core tests. This means the A18 outperforms its predecessor in single-core processing. However, the multi-core score is where things get interesting. The highest multi-core score for the A17 Pro in our benchmarks was 7,224, which is actually higher than the newly surfaced A18 score. This discrepancy contradicts Apple’s assertion that the A18 should be superior in multi-core processing as well.

It’s essential to remember that initial benchmark results, especially those released immediately after product announcements, can be inconsistent. For example, a Geekbench result for the Apple M4 chip surfacing right after its announcement didn’t accurately reflect its performance capabilities. Therefore, it’s wise to approach these early benchmarks with caution.

The good news is that the wait to see the true performance of the Apple A18 won’t be long. The new iPhone 16 models will be available starting September 20. Real-world tests and comprehensive reviews will soon reveal how this chip truly stacks up.
