America’s Biggest Home Security Provider Confirms Customer Data Breach

America’s largest home security provider has confirmed a cybersecurity incident that exposed customer information, raising fresh concerns about how criminals are targeting major household brands.

ADT, the biggest home security company in the United States by revenue, said a data breach occurred on April 20. While the company did not reveal how many customers were impacted, ADT confirmed that some customer records were accessed. The compromised details include names, phone numbers, and home addresses. ADT also reported that the last four digits of certain customers’ Social Security Numbers or Tax IDs may have been taken, along with dates of birth.

ADT stated that sensitive financial details were not exposed in the intrusion. According to the company, no bank account or payment information was accessed. ADT also said it has contacted individuals it believes were affected.

A hacking group calling itself ShinyHunters has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. The group alleges it obtained personal identifying information tied to more than 10 million customers, along with additional internal corporate data. ShinyHunters is also making a “pay or leak” threat, saying it will release the data if a ransom is not paid.

The amount being demanded has not been disclosed. ShinyHunters has reportedly set an April 27 deadline for ADT to reach out, warning that failure to do so will result in the data being leaked and could lead to “several annoying (digital) problems.”

As of the latest update, it remains unclear whether ADT has responded directly to the group’s demands.
