AMD’s Threadripper 9980X has taken the spotlight by surpassing its predecessor, the Threadripper PRO 7995WX, despite having significantly fewer cores. This impressive feat is showcased in its outstanding performance in the multi-core PassMark test, where it scored a remarkable 147,481 points, earning the number one ranking.
It’s typical for new processors to outperform older versions, but what’s intriguing here is that a CPU with fewer cores has outpaced a previous flagship model. Both processors come from different generations and families, with the PRO series designed for the enterprise sector, offering up to 96 cores and 192 threads.
The Ryzen Threadripper 9980X shines as the flagship of its Shimada Peak lineup, catering to both enthusiasts and professionals who seek top-notch performance. When benchmarked using PassMark, a software that measures CPU performance, the Threadripper 9980X secured the top spot with its impressive multi-threaded score.
Compared to its direct predecessor, the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X, which scored an average of 136,517 points, the 9980X offers an 8% improvement. While this isn’t a groundbreaking generational leap, it did manage to outperform the high core-count PRO 7995WX, which scored 145,572 points. Additionally, the Threadripper 9980X excelled in single-core performance with 4594 points, marking a significant 13.7% improvement over the 7980X.
Both CPUs share the same core/thread setup and TDP rating, but the advanced Zen 5 architecture and faster clock speeds of the 9980X provide a notable performance boost. However, remember that PassMark scores can vary, becoming more accurate as more tests are conducted.
While the Threadripper 9980X dominates in certain areas, it’s worth noting that single-core performance isn’t its strongest suit. It falls short when compared to mainstream desktop processors like the Core Ultra 9 285K, which scored 5,096 points, and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, with a score just over 4,700 points in single-threaded tests. Nonetheless, the 9980X remains a powerful contender in its domain.
