This eight-core powerhouse not only ranks as the best-selling CPU across numerous retail outlets but has also earned the title of the most popular chip according to CPU-Z’s latest statistics.
These stats, derived from CPU-Z’s user validation data, provide a global perspective on CPU trends. While this method isn’t the absolute measure of popularity, it offers an insightful alternative to shipment-based metrics. As of April 2025, AMD has seized almost 16.6% more of the market share, with Intel seeing a 10% decrease. This shift marks a significant momentum change, positioning AMD potentially closer to overtaking Intel’s long-held dominance.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has played a pivotal role in this market shift, dominating sales and capturing 4.3% of the user validation share. Following closely is the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with a 2.1% share. The popularity of these processors has contributed to a surge in the preference for 8-core CPUs, now leading with a 32.6% year-on-year growth. As of now, 8-core CPUs constitute 24.7% of systems validated on CPU-Z, outpacing 6-core CPUs at 22.5%, 4-core CPUs at 19.4%, and 2-core CPUs at 9.6%.
This trend has exerted a considerable impact on socket preferences, with the AM5 socket experiencing a meteoric rise. Although it stands second with a 15.1% share, its annual growth is an astonishing 144.9%. Meanwhile, the AM4 socket remains the most widespread, holding 20.1% of the market but showing a decline of 11%.
On the chipset frontier, users seem to favor budget-friendly options like the B650, which packs plenty of features and supports all AM5 processors, including the Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series. This preference underscores a shifting consumer focus towards more cost-effective solutions without compromising on performance.
