AMD is quietly expanding AFMF 2.1 (Fluid Motion Frames) with a new Fast Motion Response control designed to make high-speed gameplay look better and feel smoother. While this option isn’t visible in the standard Radeon Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.9.2, it appears when using the PyTorch on Windows Preview driver (Edition 25.20.01.14) on compatible Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 GPUs.
Once enabled, Fast Motion Response adds two choices under AFMF:
– Repeat Frame: Repeats the last frame during very fast motion to preserve image clarity and avoid artifacts like ghosting or smearing.
– Blended Frame: Blends frames to approximate missing motion, delivering a smoother perception of motion at the cost of some blur in rapid action.
These options tackle a known challenge for frame generation: extremely fast on-screen movement. Previously, AFMF relied on Search Mode to disable frame generation in such moments, while Performance Mode focused on overall throughput. Fast Motion Response gives users more control over what happens when motion gets too fast for clean interpolation, letting you prioritize either razor-sharp imagery or fluid motion.
Practical guidance:
– Choose Repeat Frame if you value crisp visuals and want to minimize artifacts in twitchy shooters or scenes with sudden camera pans.
– Choose Blended Frame if you prefer a silkier feel in racing games or open-world titles, and don’t mind a touch of motion blur during intense sequences.
The addition wasn’t highlighted in the preview driver’s release notes, but in practice it directly addresses one of the toughest scenarios for frame generation. It’s a promising step for AFMF 2.1, though it will benefit from deeper testing across different genres, engines, and refresh rates. If you’re running an RX 7000 or RX 9000 series card and don’t see the option in Adrenalin, the PyTorch on Windows Preview driver is currently the way to try Fast Motion Response.
