Advanced Micro Devices’ (AMD) latest offerings in desktop APUs, the Ryzen 8000G series, are reported to face a performance limiting firmware issue. While these processors mark a significant leap forward from previous generations with the transition from Vega-based GPUs to the advanced RDNA graphics architecture, a firmware bug has been discovered that is affecting their performance capabilities.
The issue at hand primarily affects two models of the series: the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G and the Ryzen 5 8600G. Performance benchmarks conducted have revealed a concerning trend where these APUs perform optimally for a short duration before undergoing thermal throttling, leading to a noticeable drop in performance. The root cause of this behavior is a problematic firmware that incorrectly applies the STAPM (Skin Temperature Aware Power Management) limit to the processors after they are fully operational.
STAPM is a feature that AMD designed for notebook and laptop processors. Its function is to monitor thermal conditions and regulate the power draw to prevent overheating. However, this feature is not intended for the desktop-class Ryzen 8000G APUs, and its inadvertent activation is leading to performance drops, with the APUs wattage decreasing significantly from 80 watts to nearly 50 watts during benchmarks.
In response to this, AMD has acknowledged the issue and has stated that these erroneous STAPM limits will be addressed in a “future BIOS update.” Once the update is rolled out, it is expected that both the Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G will be able to perform to their full potential without being hampered by inappropriate thermal management practices.
The anticipated BIOS update is yet to receive a confirmed release date, but once applied, it promises to unlock the true capabilities of these powerful APUs, giving desktop users the performance level that aligns with their expectations from AMD’s latest hardware advancements. Interested parties can stay tuned for the update and in the meantime, may refer to detailed benchmark analysis and videos available online for an in-depth understanding of the issue.
