AMD Radeon RX 9070 Unleashes Power with BIOS Tweaks, Surpasses RX 9070 XT in Performance

An intriguing development has surfaced from the tech community, where a user has successfully transformed an AMD Radeon RX 9070 Non-XT GPU into a performance powerhouse through clever modding. Utilizing a BIOS meant for the XT variant of the same graphics card, this modification has significantly enhanced the card’s capabilities.

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT are powered by the Navi 48 GPU, yet they are separately tuned in terms of their core specifications and performance limits. While the XT version boasts more cores, altering the Non-XT version to unlock these isn’t straightforward as it might have been in the past. Nevertheless, enthusiasts still find ways to push the boundaries.

In a bold experiment, a forum member known as Gurdi took the initiative to swap the BIOS of a Non-XT with that of an XT model. The results were impressive: prior to the mod, the GPU operated between 2140 MHz and 2610 MHz with a Thermal Graphics Power (TGP) of 220W. However, after undergoing the BIOS transformation, the clock speeds surged to between 2480 MHz and 3030 MHz, with the TGP climbing to 317W.

This transformation was executed using an ASUS PRIME version of the RX 9070, and remarkably, it allowed the modified Non-XT card to outperform a standard RX 9070 XT in synthetic benchmark tests. This feat is particularly surprising given that the XT variant inherently has more processing cores. Interestingly, while the XT version typically requires three 8-pin connectors for power, the Non-XT model with its new BIOS configuration still thrived with just two.

Gurdi also shared that, when it comes to gaming performance, his modded RX 9070 edged out the XT variant, which adds another layer of intrigue to this DIY upgrade. However, it’s crucial to highlight that BIOS flashing on GPUs can be risky. Those considering such an experiment should proceed with caution and have some experience with vBIOS flashing. For those daring enough to try, the necessary BIOS is reportedly available through certain tech resources.

This creative modification not only showcases the potential hidden within the RX 9070 Non-XT but also underscores the innovative spirit of tech enthusiasts searching for extra performance.
