The AMD EPYC 4004 processor has sparked interest in the overclocking community thanks to its unexpected performance on HWBOT’s leaderboard. Originally designed as a workstation CPU, it has surprisingly found a niche on consumer-grade motherboards, offering enthusiasts a new avenue to explore. Unlike other EPYC processors, the 4004 doesn’t require any modifications for consumer motherboard compatibility, making it an intriguing choice for tech enthusiasts willing to experiment.
At a price point of €160, it’s more expensive than the Ryzen 5 7500F. While the Ryzen 5 offers more cores and might be a logical option for most, the EPYC 4004 holds its own charm due to its unique 4-core setup—a configuration absent in the Ryzen AM5 series. This makes it a novel consideration for those looking to harness its capabilities in unconventional ways outside the typical gaming realm.
A noteworthy test by Der8auer revealed some surprising results. He managed to get the AMD EPYC 4124P running smoothly on an ASUS X670E ROG Crosshair Hero motherboard. This feat is particularly surprising since no consumer motherboard officially supports this processor. The fact that it booted without requiring a custom BIOS and supports overclocking through AMD EXPO 6000 MT/s is impressive by itself.
Der8auer’s approach included delidding the processor and enhancing it with a custom water cooling setup, using liquid metal to keep temperatures in check. These modifications resulted in a drastic 20°C temperature drop and a reduced power consumption by 6W, offering enthusiasts potential for further overclocking.
Following his tweaks, the processor achieved a clock speed increase of 500 MHz, leading to a notable 10% boost in gaming performance. However, it still lags behind the Ryzen 5 7600X. This trial showed the limitations of a highly overclocked 4-core CPU in modern gaming. Still, the EPYC 4004’s performance on consumer motherboards opens up possibilities for its use, especially if its market price decreases. This exploration into the EPYC 4004’s capabilities exemplifies the spirit of innovation that keeps tech enthusiasts engaged.
