There’s buzz in the air about Amazon’s anticipated live-action Tomb Raider film potentially being shelved, as whispered rumors suggest it has quietly been canceled. This speculation, swirling from The Daily Mail’s insider leaks, has yet to be confirmed by Amazon, but if true, it could be a significant setback for the company.
For Amazon, this film wasn’t just another movie project; it was the cornerstone of a planned cinematic universe centered around the iconic adventurer, Lara Croft. The project originally announced in 2023 alongside dj2 Entertainment, was poised to weave a larger narrative tapestry that would connect with a new Tomb Raider video game announced in 2022. This ambitious universe had reportedly positioned itself to be Amazon’s second-largest IP, trailing only behind their colossal venture, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Adding fuel to the excitement, rumors even suggested that Sophie Turner had been in talks to don Lara Croft’s legendary boots.
This project, however, should not be mistaken for Netflix’s rendition, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. This animated series, which came out last year, has enjoyed a warm reception with a positive 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is already gearing up for its second season.
If the cancellation rumors are accurate, it marks a significant pivot for Amazon’s entertainment strategy and raises questions about the future direction of the Tomb Raider franchise on the big screen. All eyes will be on Amazon for any official updates, as fans and industry watchers alike eagerly await clarification.
