Amazon considers moving Amazon Pay into a standalone app in India

Amazon Explores Creating Independent App for Amazon Pay in India

In a strategic move to enhance its payments service, Amazon is contemplating the possibility of transitioning its Amazon Pay feature into a separate application in India. The move comes as a bid to intensify the usage and visibility of Amazon Pay within the competitive Indian market.

Amazon Pay, integrated within Amazon’s primary shopping app, serves various functions including money transfers to individuals, bill payments, insurance purchases, investment in mutual funds, digital gold, and booking travel tickets. Despite these features, the service is considering gaining autonomy to establish itself as a distinct entity.

According to insider information from individuals privy to the situation, the tech conglomerate has been mulling over the segregation of its payment services from its e-commerce platform for approximately a year. Official steps toward this development include reaching out to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for necessary approvals to move forward.

The rationale behind this contemplation is the belief by some Amazon executives that the payment service, Amazon Pay, may become more prominently recognized if it operates as an independent app rather than within the confines of the larger e-commerce application.

While plans are underway, the sources, who have opted to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the discussions, emphasize that Amazon is handling a multitude of challenges in India. Consequently, the company could revise its current plans or potentially discard the proposal altogether.

Transaction data underscores Amazon Pay’s current position in the Indian market, where it occupies the sixth spot among apps on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the predominant online transaction platform in India. Influential competitors such as Walmart’s PhonePe and Google Pay dominate with significantly larger shares of transactions over the network.

Interestingly, Amazon’s consideration of a standalone payments app resonates with a broader industry trend in India. Market players are cautiously navigating the superapp model, which has not replicated the success seen in China. Flipkart, a leading competitor in India, recently consolidated its financial technology services, marking a reversal from its earlier decision to separate from its own payments wing, PhonePe.

The strategic initiatives by Amazon and Flipkart highlight the shifting dynamics in the Indian digital payment sphere as major players adapt to local market demands and consumer usage patterns to strengthen their presence and service offerings.
