The newly released Alienware m16 R2 laptop has undergone significant changes compared to its predecessor, the m16 R1. With a dedicated user base and a reputation for high performance, any alterations in the Alienware lineup are noteworthy and raise curiosity about their impact on user experience.
When it comes to sequential read performance, the Alienware m16 R2, equipped with a Samsung PM9A1 SSD, shows a read speed of 4480 MB/s, which is slightly lower than the previous x16 R1 model’s SK hynix PC801. However, it shows an improvement over the m16 R1’s Intel Kioxia KXG70ZNV512G, Lenovo Legion Slim 7, Asus ROG Zephyrus G16, and HP Omen Transcend 16-u1095ng, which have lower sequential read speeds of 3979 MB/s, 3519 MB/s, 3202 MB/s, and 3102 MB/s, respectively.
In terms of sequential write speed, the Alienware m16 R2’s performance sits at 4371 MB/s, which is lesser than its x16 R1 counterpart but still significantly better than Lenovo Legion Slim 7, Asus ROG Zephyrus G16, and HP Omen Transcend.
The laptop also exhibits solid performance in the sequential queue depth (Q8T1) read and write tests. It posted read speeds just slightly below the x16 R1 but remains competitive compared to other contenders such as Lenovo Legion Slim 7 and Asus ROG Zephyrus G16.
For 4K random read and write tests, the m16 R2 lags behind the x16 R1 model, but it surpasses other gaming laptops in its class, offering a balanced performance useful for gaming and productivity tasks.
Looking at access times, the m16 R2 displays excellent low read access times, indicative of responsive system behavior, and fast data fetching. The write access times also maintain a commendable standard, contributing to the laptop’s overall snappy performance.
Each SSD’s performance is also represented by the AS SSD benchmark score, which measures the drive’s comprehensive capabilities. According to the performance benchmark results, the Alienware m16 R2 achieves a strong score, indicating a solid balance between speed and stability.
Despite the mixed bag in terms of disk performance, the Alienware m16 R2 proves to be a potent competitor in the gaming laptop market. Its SSD choices reflect a commitment to providing efficient storage solutions, though it’s evident that there is room for improvement when directly compared to some of its peers.
